Cosmetic dentistry is a branch of dental sciences which is very specialized. For becoming a cosmetic dentist, a person needs to complete an extra degree over and above one in general dental sciences. Cosmetic dentistry options include treatments like teeth whitening, dental veneers, dentures, dental implants and smile makeovers et al.
What is teeth whitening?
This can be done at home as well as in the dental clinic. For at home options, one needs to wear a set of dental whitening trays which are to be smeared with an activating gel or lotion. These trays are worn over the teeth and gums for a given duration of time and a given number of hours each day. Slowly, but surely, the teeth start to whiten. However, this process is not permanent and can be reversed if proper care of dental hygiene is not taken. For instance, one needs to look after the dentition after getting teeth whitening done, or else the teeth will start looking yellowed or stained again. Teeth whitening can also be done in the dental clinic with the use of laser light. First, the teeth need to be prepped up. After this, they are smeared with an activating substance over which the light is passed for about half hour to one hour. This process may be repeated once more for more effective results. The teeth are whitened by a measure of a few grades. However, this procedure too is not permanent and can be reversed if proper oral hygiene standards are not maintained.
What are dental implants?
These are one of the latest techniques to come into the world of dental sciences. For this, teeth need to be extracted out. A titanium screw is drilled into the jaw bone, and the bone grows around the implant naturally. The implant becomes firm in its place in about three to four months. A dental cap or crown may be placed atop the implant to function as the tooth which the world sees. Implants can last for the entire duration of the lifetime of the patient if they are cared for properly. They are permanent and not taken out at night or at any other time.
What are dentures?
Cosmetic dentistry also makes use of dentures. These are also called artificial teeth. The dentures can last for a duration of five to seven years after which they may become lose or ill-fitting with time. They are temporary and removed each night before the patient goes to sleep. They are placed in a jar containing cleansing solution into which a cleansing tablet has been added. The solution may be used for brushing the dentures as well. The dentures can be brushed with soap or with a toothpaste meant for this purpose. Dentures are such that the patient should not laugh too loudly while using them since they may accidentally slip out of the mouth. Also, the patient should not bite into food items which are very hard of sticky or else the dentures may crack.
