A dental filling is used to restore the appearance and function of teeth that have experienced damage or decay. Fillings work by filling in spaces that food particles and bacteria can use to access the inner portions of a tooth. The treatment is often used to seal off holes or voids in teeth caused by cavities. Fillings are an extremely common procedure, and almost all patients will require a filling at some point or another.
The oral care experts at Cambridge Dental Group provide patients with tooth-colored fillings that look like natural teeth.
Also called composite fillings, tooth-colored fillings are comprised of a combination of quartz and glass fillers housed inside a resin medium. Because of their superb strength, tooth-colored fillings add to the overall strength of the tooth.
The first step when receiving a tooth-colored filling is for the dentist to remove any decay that is present within the tooth. After the tooth has been cleaned, all voids or holes will be sealed off using a composite filling material. Using a dental curing light, the composite material is hardened to give it strength and stability. The process is completed by polishing and shaping the filling, so the tooth has a natural appearance. Afterward, the patient will be able to resume their usual eating, brushing and flossing practices.
